Ukiyo-e: Special Japanese Art Prints
Ukiyo-e are probably the most famous works of art in the world of Japanese art. Strictly speaking, they are a separate genre of Japanese art. Originally, the term referred to Japanese art prints that reflected the atmosphere and attitude to life of the emerging Japanese bourgeoisie in the cities of the Edo period. However, the term Ukiyo-e is now also used in literature for other motifs such as animals and plant motifs that were created using woodblock printing and thus with the most common stylistic device of the original Ukiyo-e.
In our Kakemono scroll painting online shop you will find a variety of different Japanese art prints in the Ukiyo-e style. Our pictures are mostly original, unique pieces that we purchase directly from art dealers in Japan.

Japanese Art Prints with History
The term Ukiyo-e was first used in 1682. Hishikawa Moronobu described the genre paintings that depicted people's everyday lives. The technique continued to develop over the next 80 years, until color prints were possible in 1760. Due to the production method, these prints could be reproduced quickly and easily, giving ordinary people an insight into the pleasures of city life. Ironically, Ukiyo-e were not considered art in Japan for a long time, but at best "mass entertainment." It was only in the last century that Japanese art prints of this kind gained artificial recognition, first in the West and then in Japan itself. Today, Ukiyo-e is a well-known and independent art genre with a long history.
Since we primarily offer originals in our online shop, almost every picture comes with its own special story. Occasionally we also offer reprints by particularly well-known artists, but even these are unique due to their artistic arrangement. We want to offer more than just a motif - we want to offer a small piece of authentic Japanese history on your own wall. As a gateway to Japan, we try to bring the flair of Ukiyo-e and other works of art to everyone who is enthusiastic about the aesthetics and history of Japan. Whether in your own home or in business premises or offices, in the dojo or on display: Japanese art prints attract attention and quickly become the eye-catcher in any room.
If you would like to give a work of art a second chance, take a look at this category in our online shop! Our Second Chance Gallery presents Japanese art prints that show signs of wear and tear due to age. Nevertheless, these pictures have a special character.
